How to Build a Raised Garden Bed in South Africa

Raised garden beds give you more control over your soil, drainage and planting space. They are useful where the existing ground is compacted, poorly drained, or difficult to work.

They can also make planting and maintenance easier. The result, however, depends on planning the position, dimensions, materials and drainage before construction starts.

Why Build a Raised Garden Bed?

A raised garden bed is a contained growing area positioned above the surrounding ground. It can be made from timber, bricks, concrete blocks, stone or a prefabricated metal frame.

The main benefit is control. You can add suitable soil without improving the entire garden, keep people from walking across the growing area, and manage drainage more effectively.

Raised beds can also reduce bending and make smaller gardens easier to organise.

They do not automatically use less water. Raised soil can dry out quickly in hot or windy conditions. Mulch, suitable soil and controlled irrigation are what improve water management.

Choose the Right Position

Most vegetables and herbs need several hours of direct sunlight each day. Watch the proposed area before committing to it, as walls, buildings and trees may cast more shade than expected.

The position should also have:

  • Access to water
  • A clear drainage route
  • Enough room to work around the bed
  • Space for a wheelbarrow
  • Firm, reasonably level ground

Avoid low areas where rainwater collects.

Check for underground pipes, cables and irrigation lines before excavating or drilling post holes.

Decide on the Size

Keep the bed narrow enough to reach the centre without stepping onto the soil.

A width of about 900 mm to 1.2 metres works well when the bed can be reached from both sides. Make it narrower when it can only be accessed from one side. Raised-bed guidance commonly recommends a maximum width of roughly 1.2 metres for this reason.

The length depends on the available space. Longer timber beds need additional supports to prevent the sides from bowing under the weight of wet soil.

There is no standard height for every project. A low bed may be enough where the soil underneath is healthy and can be loosened. A taller bed provides greater soil depth and easier access, but costs more to build and fill.

Choose a Suitable Material

The material affects the cost, lifespan, and equipment required.

Timber

Timber beds are quick to assemble and suit smaller DIY projects.

Use straight, structurally sound timber intended for outdoor conditions. Check which treatment has been applied when the bed will be used to grow food. Avoid reclaimed boards if you do not know what paint, preservative or chemical treatment they contain.

Long sides may need intermediate posts or cross-bracing.

Bricks or concrete blocks

Masonry beds are more permanent and can work well in landscaped gardens, schools and community projects.

They need a level, stable base. Higher or longer walls may also need a suitable foundation or reinforcement to withstand the pressure of wet soil.

Stone

Stone creates a durable finish but takes longer to position and build.

The shape of the stone will determine whether it can be dry-stacked or needs mortar. Plan how the stone and soil will be moved before construction starts.

Metal

Prefabricated metal beds are quick to install and take up less space than masonry walls.

Choose a product made for outdoor use. Check the protective coating, edge finish, and resistance to corrosion, particularly in coastal areas.

Equipment You May Need

The equipment should match the scale and construction method. A small timber bed needs far less than a large masonry landscaping project.

Circular saw

A circular saw makes clean, consistent cuts when building a timber frame.

Calculate the Soil Volume

Measure the inside of the completed bed, not the outside walls.

Use this calculation:

Length × width × soil depth = volume

A bed measuring 2 metres long, 1 metre wide and 400 mm deep requires:

2 × 1 × 0.4 = 0.8 cubic metres of soil

Allow for some settlement after watering.

Use a balanced mixture of suitable topsoil and mature compost. Avoid filling the bed with compost, fresh manure or undecomposed garden waste.

A soil test is worthwhile for a larger or permanent food garden, especially where nutrient levels or pH are uncertain.

How to Build the Bed

1. Mark the area

Mark the outside dimensions and check that the corners are square.

Leave enough room for access, maintenance, and a wheelbarrow.

2. Clear the site

Remove grass, weeds, rubble, and roots.

Loosen compacted soil beneath an open-bottomed bed, so roots and water can move into the ground below.

3. Prepare the base

Level the site before assembling the frame.

Masonry beds may need excavation, compacted base material, and a suitable footing.

4. Build the structure

Assemble the timber frame or construct the walls.

Check the level and alignment as you work. Add supports to long timber sides before filling the bed.

5. Provide drainage

An open-bottomed bed over natural soil should drain into the ground.

A bed built on paving or concrete needs drainage outlets and a safe route for runoff. Do not seal the base unless the bed has been designed as a contained or wicking system.

6. Add the soil

Fill the bed in manageable layers.

Spread the soil evenly, but do not heavily compact it. Leave space below the top edge for mulch and watering.

7. Add irrigation and mulch

A drip or soaker system delivers water close to the roots.

Cover exposed soil with mulch to reduce evaporation and limit weed growth. Check the soil before watering, as raised beds can dry out faster than surrounding ground.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Making the bed too wide

You should be able to reach the centre without standing on the soil.

Starting on an uneven base

An uneven base can twist timber frames and cause masonry walls to lean or crack.

Blocking drainage

A sealed base or badly positioned lining can trap water around plant roots.

Underestimating the soil required

Calculate the internal volume before finalising the height and length.

Failing to support long sides

Wet soil is heavy. Weak fasteners and unsupported timber can bow or fail.

Hiring equipment the job does not need

A small timber bed does not require excavation or compaction machinery. Hire according to the scale of the work.
